Well I pulled down this building, each stone and each brick And I cleared out the rubble so nothing would stick I’ve got dust on my fingers and blood in my lungs I’ve got the sun on my neck and the salt on my gums Alright Alright Whoa alright And my head keeps on pounding like a forty gallon drum While my legs start to buckle under the weight of it all With a rasp in my throat and rust in my breath As I push out the debris ‘til nothing is left Alright Alright Whoa alright It was only bricks and mortar But I built it with my hands Now there’s an empty patch of gravel where I stand What was solid stone foundation Has now drifted into sand I was once a proud and foolish little man Now I stand in the centre of the ruin and the fall Write my name in the dust in a childish scrawl I lift up my head as the rain thunders down And it soaks through my chest and into the ground Alright Alright Whoa alright It was only bricks and mortar But I built it with my hands Now there’s an empty patch of wet gravel where I stand What was solid stone foundation Has now drifted into sand I was once a proud and foolish little man And I trapped my heart Between Masonite walls And I lose my love Every time the wind blows

As I leaned on the hood of your daddy’s old car I positioned one hand outta sight He said “Son make sure you take good care of her Bring her back safe at the end of the night” “Yes sir”, I replied with a skip of my heart “For I am an honorable man” He said “I wasn’t talking about the girl you little fool” As he shoved those car keys in my hand He sang Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La-Oh As we drove that old Ford right down the Port Road Straight on into the night Well I noticed the look and the mist in your eyes As the dust settled onto the track You’d been trying so hard for year after year Just hoping his love would come back But his heart was too cold and his words were so rough They worked their way under your skin So we boosted his car and stepped on the gas And we found a new place to begin We sang Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La-Oh As we drove that old Ford right down the Port Road Straight on into the night But that baggage you carried was stronger than steel It followed us from town to town And no matter how hard, I tried to lift it It insisted on weighing you down ‘Til there came the evening you gave up the fight And took that long walk on your own And at 7am, the sun slowly rose On your body weighed down by the stone You sang Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La, Oh-La-La-La-Oh As we drove that old Ford right down the Port Road Straight on into the night As I leaned on the hood of your daddy’s old car Saw nothing but black sky and lights I scattered your ashes over the bay And I prayed that you’d sleep safe tonight
